Checklist for a healthy
horse
Peak performance and optimum health for your horse don't "just
happen"!
Your horse depends on you to provide the conditions needed for
overall fitness and well-being. Keep him in top condition by paying
attention to the following:
Good nutrition
•
adequate intake for age/breed/use of horse
•
good quality feed
Preventive health care
•
vaccination against infectious equine diseases
o
encephalitis, including Eastern, Western, Venezuelan, West Nile
o
tetanus
o
rhinopneumonitis
o
influenza
o
strangles
o
rabies
•
some vaccines may be needed more than once
per year, depending on:
o
environment
o
travel with horse
Parasite control
•
internal - regular de-worming
•
external
o
flies
o
lice
o
ticks
o
mosquitoes
Dental health
•
maintenance exam and treatment by veterinarian experienced in equine dentistry every 6-12
months
•
check mouth weekly for sores
•
palpate cheeks for sharp points
•
check for symptoms of dental problems
Hoof care
•
trimming
•
shoeing
